- Rosters- can include up to a maximum of 10 players. Any ratio of men and women may participate, including all male and all female teams. Players must be 12 years of age or older. Rosters are due to the Program Director on or before the deadline of August 29. No roster changes can be made after the third week of games unless a season ending injury occurs.
- Forfeits- will occur when a team is not able to begin a game with at least four players. A team with less than four players present from their roster will be allowed a 5-minute grace period. After 5-minutes the team will lose the first game. After 10-minutes, the match is forfeited.
1. Make sure you have a full team for every game.
2. The manager must handle any dispute. Don’t let one of your players face suspension.
3. You are responsible for your team and fan conduct. Abusive language, unruly conduct, poor sportsmanship will not be tolerated.
4. Know the rules. Tell your players the rules. This will help the game run smoothly and help your team concentrate on playing.
5. Respectfully hand game balls to officials after the end of the game.
6. Alcohol is prohibited at The HUB in any way, shape, or form.
· Teams- A maximum of 6 players will compete on a side per game. A minimum of 4 total players is needed to start a game. Substitutes may enter the game only during timeouts or in the case of an injury. All players on teams must sign a liability waiver for the HUB in order to play in this league.
· Court- The game will be played on an elementary size basketball court. Use the inside of the blue lines as boundaries. The playing field shall be a rectangle approximately 60’x40’, divided into 2 equal sections by a center boundary line.
· Equipment- The equipment (balls) will be distributed by HUB staff at the beginning of game play. If no one is immediately around please look in the upstairs offices. The dodgeball is an 8.25” rubber ball.
· The Game- begins by placing 6 dodgeballs equally spread out along the center line. Players then take a position behind their end-line. Following a signal by an official, teams approach the center line to retrieve the balls (only one ball per retrieving player during the opening rush). Balls must be brought back to your end-line before you can throw at your opponent. Any balls still remaining on the center-line AFTER the opening rush are considered a LIVE ball and do not need to be brought back to the end-line. It is ok to retrieve a ball and toss it back to a teammate waiting behind the end-line. The player must catch the ball behind the end-line. A violation will result in the ball being awarded to the opposing team.
The object of the game is to eliminate all opposing players by getting them “OUT”. This may be done by:
1. Hitting any body part of an opposing player with a thrown ball. It is possible to knock out two players with a single throw. Note: Any ball hitting the ground prior to hitting a player or object outside of the playing field is considered a dead ball. The hit player will remain in the game.
2. Catching a thrown ball by your opponent before it touches the ground or on a deflection off another teammate. This results in the player throwing the ball to be out and allows the player’s team who caught the ball to send 1 player of their choice back into the game. If a ball is deflected off a player and caught one more person is in the game for the catch and the person that the ball deflected off is still in the game. If the player’s team who caught the ball still has all 6 players in the game that team cannot add a 7th player. A ball caught prior to a player stepping out of bounds is a legal catch as long as the player has one foot inbounds and possession of the ball before going out of bounds. In this situation, both the throwing player and catching player are out, but the catching team may send a player back into the game. It cannot be the player who initially caught the ball.
3. Boundaries:
· If any part of a player’s body touches an out of bounds line, the player shall be deemed “out”. This includes stepping on the center-line during opening rush.
· A player may only leave the court during play to retrieve a ball. The player must return through their end-line. A player hit while out of bounds retrieving a ball will not be counted as out. Players are not allowed to intentionally toss a ball they possess out of bounds and retrieve it to avoid being hit. A violation will result in the player being called out.
· A ball out of bounds must be brought back into the game through your end-line. Even if you are able to grab the ball while standing in bounds.
· If a ball is deflected off another person, the ball is still considered live when it crosses the out of bounds line until it hits the ground or wall. Players must wait until the ball hits the ground or wall before going to get it. Otherwise, you will be called out for attempting to catch the ball.
4. Casual profanity or offensive language is prohibited. Teams will receive one warning; a second offense by any player on the team will result in the offending player being called out.
5. You are NOT allowed to deflect a ball thrown at you with another ball. The ball is part of the body therefore, if it is hit while in your possession you are out.
6. Players must immediately leave the court when eliminated from the game. Please do so by conducting yourself in a respectful manner. No slamming the ball to the ground or taking an additional toss at the opposing team. You should not delay in getting off the court. Look for the closest sideline to exit so you are not interfering with the game. Eliminated players should stand on the opposite sideline of your bench players so officials and opposing teams can see who is eligible to enter the game on a caught ball.
7. The first to legally eliminate all opposing players will be declared the winner.
· Match Play- will consist of 10 games being played regardless if your team might win or lose all 10 games. There is a ½ hour time limit per match. Any games not completed in the 1/2-hour time limit will be a tie.
· Scoring System Per Game- Win=2 points, tie=1 point and a loss=0 points. Standings are based on total points. If a tie occurs at the end of the season, head-to-head records will be used as a tiebreaker. Each team is in charge of keeping their own score and giving it to HUB official after the matches. These will be tallied for season scoring. If you fail to give the sheet to HUB official then you will lose overall season points for end of season results.
· Playoffs- Teams are seeded according to regular season finish. Teams play best out of 10 games or the team leading after ½ hour will advance.
· Dead Ball- Any ball hitting the ground prior to hitting a player or other object outside of the playing field (wall, ceiling, etc) is considered a dead ball.
· Ball Possession and Grip- Players may control more than one ball at a time after the opening rush. This includes retrieving more than one ball from out of bounds. Players are allowed to grip the ball to throw it. Players are NOT ALLOWED to compress the air out of the ball. Examples would be pushing the ball flat against the gym floor or placing the ball between your knees and squeezing the air out. Doing this ruins the ball and makes it almost impossible to throw with any velocity. Any offending team will immediately forfeit their current game and play the next game 5 on 6 with the offending player sitting out.
· Stalling- Teams are not allowed to control all six balls on their side of the court for more than 8 seconds. Therefore, the controlling team must make a legitimate effort to get at least one ball across the center-line and into the opponent’s back court. Setting the ball just across your opponent’s center-line in not a legitimate effort. Players can still be eliminated from the game during this sequence. If a time violation does not occur all of the balls will be placed on the center-line and play resume with an opening rush.
· Timeouts and Substitutions- will be allowed. Each team will get one 30-second time-out per game. At this time a team may substitute players. You may only substitute players who did not start the game. The game will resume with an opening rush. Any balls still remaining on the center-line AFTER the rush are considered a LIVE ball and do not need to be brought back to the end line.
· Rules will be Enforced- sometimes by a HUB official but mostly it is the honor system between teams. If there is no HUB official then two players from each team (not playing in that game) will officiate using the rules listed above. Players are expected to follow the rules even if an official happens to miss a call. The game is very fast paced and calls can be missed. The officials decision is final- NO EXCEPTIONS. Officals have the authority to eject players or call off the game if needed, however I hope that it never gets to that, this a recreational league played for FUN.
· Spectators- Spectators are not allowed to interfere with the game. Example: rolling or kicking an out of bounds ball to a player still in the game. Violation will result in the ball being awarded to the opposing team.
· Protests- will only be accepted in cases involving use of an ineligible player who is not on the team roster. The player in question must show picture ID to the official. The official will check the ID with the team roster. If a protest is upheld, the protested games will be forfeited for the team with the violation. Protests of judgment calls will not be accepted.
